The beginner’s intensive will introduce practitioners to structured improvisations through which the principles of the training are applied toward performance.

Overview: intermediate/advanced intensive
An intensive, ongoing, preperformative psychophysical process of performer training through Asian martial/meditation arts including t’aiquiauan, Indian yoga and the closely related martial art, kalarippayattu. Intensive workshops explore body-mind connections through psychophysical disciplines, a sense of activation through breath in movement, focus/concentration, circulation of energy through the body and relationship to the performance environment. Over long-term practice, this work enables participants’ bodies to ‘become all eyes’, i.e. to develop an intuitive awareness necessary for performance. The beginning work focuses on techniques and forms, and cultivation of the bodymind awareness through repetition of exercises and introduction of key principles. Principles are eventually applied to performance through structured improvisations. [For further background information, see making the body all eyes].

Further description
Since the intermediate/advanced intensive is only for those of you who have trained sufficient for me not to have to repeat very basic work, we will attempt to build on your own skill level with basic exercises, and with intermediate and advanced level work, including weapons (for those of you who have started). As in Kerala kalaris there will still be considerable differences in levels of skill and experience between and amongst you. So you will each need to work at your own level/pace, but alongside each other.

Organization of each day/week

We will work Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (morning only). Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday will be a half-day only. We will organize the half-day around the weather, taking a half-day off mid-west on the ‘best’ weather day.

After our common Saturday meal, we will talk about the organization of the training and scheduling for each week/day. The overall plan is as follows:
• Two yoga warm-up/kalarippayattu sessions daily lasting approximately two to two and one-half hours each. We can take a shorter lunch break this year between the sessions, and accommodation has been made for those staying off-site to stay on-site for their lunch (see below).
• One t’aiquiquan session daily - to be held whenever possible outdoors at the beach at low tide, i.e., we will organize the day around low time and weather, travel by car (assuming we have enough transport) to the beach, and spend approximately 45-60 minutes at the beach
• Additional time for performance application during weeks 2 (see below).
• Additional activities to be schedule on weekly basis: occasional walks tied to t’aiquiauan and breathing exercise sessions (at least once weekly); possible interaction/attendance at events of the Centre for Performance Research Summer School.

One schedule might be as follows:
10:00-12:00 Yoga/kalari Session 1
12:00-13:15 t’ai chi session at beach
13:15-15:00 lunch
15:00-18:00 Yoga/kalari Session 2

Note: During weeks 2 and 3, when I am doing massage, we will necessarily have to have a somewhat longer lunch break to allow those receiving massage to fully digest their food, and/or massage may sometimes be given in the mornings with a somewhat later start.

Week 1
Focus on training only and weapons work as appropriate.

Week 2/3
Focus on training, massage, weapons. Planning of time for performance applications based on what is best for participants-structured improvisations.
